near yet so far Part of the 3-day PACKERS Invades Marinduque is to summit Mt. Malindig, Highest peak in the Island. The Picture above was taken when we were leaving Tres Reyes Island (Island to the right is the well-known Bellarocca Island Resort). From Tres Reyes Island we then headed to Brgy. Sihi for registration and secured Guide which is mandatory then headed to the Jump Off point. Entry point is from the highway then entering to a small community, further we found ourselves inside the Coconut Field. We were still on the lowland area however what amazed me the most was that in every Coconut Tree, there were mosses growing on its body. Our guide told us that during November - January the area is mostly covered with fog and yes the temperature is really cold on those month. PACKERS! Existing the Coconut Field, ala Mt. Talamitam scenic greeted us. Wow, scourging heat in an open - full assault field for about an hour or so. Took a 10 minute (I think) rest under a tree while savoring the cool breeze and the beautiful landscape below. Sir Paul decided not to pursue the climb, his knee starts to ache (injured from the last climb) and decided to stay and will wait for us on our descend. The slope trail ahead was 70% covered with tall cogon grass until a short open space leading to a Military Base / Telecomm Tower. Military Base Camp At the Military camp we met 4 hikers with their guide chatting with 2 Military men stationed that day. Later we found out that they re tracked back to the Base because of clearing issue and a huge Anotong Tree (I forgot the local term, basta eto yung tawag kung saan dinidikitan ng mama ko ng Vanda Orchids nya.. hahahaha) blocked the trail. One of the Military guy insisted not to pursue the climb because the summit was covered with clouds at that moment (it was about 3:00pm) however we requested to try it out then return if the trail is not passable. We had a go signal then continued the trek, pacing was a bit faster this time to make sure we reached the jump off before night falls. Entering the forested area was quite eerie, misty...mossy forest, once in a while the trail was then covered with fog..... ohhh the Chill!...... butas butas muna si Kuya Guide Our guide took some time paving the path, cut the Anotong trunk to half to clear the way. The summit was covered with treess..... Trees were everywhere, Good thing though... however we taught we could have a 360 view of Marinduque or a closer look on this so-called Posh Island Resort - Bellarocca. Suggestion was "Mountreeneering?" not possible because the trees were so tall.... PACKERS with KATUGA Remember the group we met at the Base Camp, they followed and we had few chit chat with them at the summit and found out they were from KATUGA Mountaineering Group. :) Couple of photoshoots then bid our goodbyes to the KATUGA members, we then started the descend. Report back to the Base Camp to ensure that we're all safe. Sir Paul was already waiting for us at the base camp, he got tired waiting so he opted to hike all the way up. The descend was fun.......... we run all the way down........ Run...Run.... Run... while Sir Ace recorded our RunScapade.... Mt. Malindig climb was a success.... I had so much fun and never felt bored during the entire hike. By the way, this was my 1 yr. Anniversary Climb...... Yahoo!!!! More Mountains to Climb..... Kitakits!
